The Department is engaged in research in the impacts of anthropogenic effects on the aquatic environment and related aquatic ecosystems. An important part of the activity is related to the assessment of the effects of surface and point sources of pollution on water quality and biological components of the aquatic environment, including eutrophication research and evaluation of the eutrophication potential of resources. An important position in the activity of the Department holds the research of the influence of hydromorphological conditions of the environment on water ecosystems and individual biological components. Water footprint assessment and life cycle assessment (LCA) create a new research area. Activities include the development of methodologies and procedures to provide expert support for the preparation of river basin district management plans and the assessment of the status of water bodies and protected areas.
