The Waste Management Center (CWM) was established on the basis of the decision of the Minister of the Environment of 1st September 2001 as an organizational unit of the Institute. Since its inception, it has been engaged in expert activities and research in a field of waste management as well as the technical support to the Department of Waste of the Ministry of the Environment, which was terminated on 31st December 2007. At present, CWM is engaged in preparation of project proposals for public tenders. In doing so, it cooperates with private enterprises, other public research institutions and universities.

- Research in new approaches of the actual waste properties identification,
- research on methods of reducing harmful substances in waste, including addressing the issues of sewage sludge hygienic security stabilization,
- proposals and assessment of variants of selected wastes treatment,
- monitoring trends and tools in a field of waste prevention,
- submitting resource materials for legislation, which incorporate research findings,
- research on the recovery of waste as a substitute for raw materials entering products and their evaluation,
- methodological support and development of planning methodology for public authorities and waste producers,
- personnel strengthening of the Departments of the Branch included in VÚV TGM, v. v. i., Testing Laboratory for Water Technology and Environmental Components.
The activity of the Department focuses mainly on research in a field of waste, research, development, application and evaluation of waste management methods. It also focuses on creating supportive mechanisms for the promotion of health and environment protection principles throughout the entire waste management cycle, on waste analyses, assessment and characterization, on verifying the actual properties of waste and on monitoring of the entire waste management process, on promoting waste prevention and minimization of waste amount and hazardous properties, and on promoting new directions resulting from legislative changes.
